Experience a culinary adventure celebrating Richard Henry Dana’s voyage from Boston around Cape Horn to our local harbor in California. Voyagers will relive this sea adventure with food, wine, photographic history, theatrical reading, film screening (Two Years before the Mast) and silent auction with fine art by Arturo Guevara and Cliff Wassmann and other donated gifts while supporting San Juan Capistrano Friends of the Library (SJC FOL), a nonprofit benefitting the SJC Library.

The event is anchored in the adventure of the Pilgrim as she sailed from Boston and chronicled by Richard Henry Dana in 1840. The tale is a classic since Dana’s love for the sea and the challenges of a long sailing voyage have been expressed with unmatched passion. Dana’s story continues to impact and educates us almost 200 years after it was written. All Californians can be proud that our beautiful local harbor was named after this brave adventurer who embarked on the brig, Pilgrim, as a common seaman.

Two Years before the Mast is an American classic (available in library bookstore) and was made into a 1946 movie by the same name. The limited screening of this film with Hollywood’s finest actors of the day will be in the Library’s La Sala room following a social hour in the courtyard.
